description
This ticket proposes the integration of Syncthing as the preferred solution for synchronizing user documents, other files, and other personal data across multiple devices running SSS. Syncthing is an open-source, peer-to-peer continuous file synchronization program. Its decentralized nature, security features (end-to-end encryption), and platform independence make it an excellent fit for the SSS philosophy of user control and privacy. Integrating Syncthing into SSS would offer several benefits: - Seamless cross-device synchronization: Users can effortlessly keep their important files synchronized across their various SSS installations (laptops, desktops, etc.). - Enhanced data privacy and security: Syncthing's peer-to-peer architecture and encryption ensure that user data remains private and is not stored on third-party servers. User autonomy and control: As an open-source solution, Syncthing aligns with the SSS emphasis on user freedom and the ability to understand and control their tools. Simplified configuration: We can aim to provide a user-friendly way to configure Syncthing within the SSS environment, potentially through Lisp-based configuration or well-documented defaults. Version control and history (optional): Syncthing offers options for file versioning, providing an extra layer of data safety. The tasks involved in this ticket might include: - Documenting the recommended Syncthing setup for SSS users. - Potentially providing example configurations or scripts to simplify initial setup. - Exploring integration with the SSS multi-user configuration to handle Syncthing setup for different users. - Ensuring Syncthing integrates well with the overall SSS user experience. By recommending and potentially streamlining the use of Syncthing, SSS can provide a robust and privacy-respecting solution for file synchronization, empowering users to maintain their data consistently across their "GNUrvana"-achieving systems.
